DIY Nautical Brooch: A Modcloth Knockoff

Don't you just love brooches? I love the "Anchors Always Pin" from Mod Cloth.
Beautiful, right? Well, let's make it.

Difficulty: ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥
Supplies:

  • sheet of stiff navy felt
  • white & red embroidery floss
  • embroidery needle
  • pin back to make it a brooch
  • E6000 glue or hot glue
  • nautical charms/buttons/ribbon
  • Cut out two pieces of stiff felt similar to this shape, whatever size you would like. Put the second one aside until the very end.
Use a washable writing utensil to draw a small circle with a line. (See picture above)
Thread your needle with the white thread and using the lines as a guide, start embroidering!
Use small, overlapped stitches. Turn on the TV or radio so you don't drive yourself nuts.
Add a small horizontal line like the picture above. It should look kind of like the female symbol.
Trace the two curvy lines of the bottom of the anchor to your felt. Embroider over those as well.
    Almost done!
Add the two pointed arrow tips.

Optional: Use the LAZY DAISY STITCH in red to copy the rope detail.
Add whatever charms or decorations you like with glue.
Squeeze some glue all over the back of the pin and line up the other felt shape you set aside earlier.
This will hide the messy work in the back. Now you have a flat surface to glue your pin back too!
    YAY for handmade knockoffs!
Instead of a pin, you could glue it to a lamp for a nautical themed room!
