Velvet 3/4 Circle Skirt Tutorial

Today I'll show you how to sew a 3/4 circle skirt using Crushed Panne Velvet I bought from JoAnn.
In order to make the pattern, check out these tutorials by Fickle Sense and The Snug Bug.

Also check out my FULL Circle Skirt Tutorial for different methods & tips.

Fold your fabric in half twice. (Also explained in the video.)

Since this is a 3/4 circle skirt, you will need to cut a quarter circle out of the skirt. Try to be as exact as possible!

This is different from my video instructions I believe: make a double fold hem around the skirt.

I sewed mine with a narrow zig-zag stitch. DO NOT pull or stretch the fabric as you sew!

Measure out a waistband 5" x waist measurement.

Fold it in half, right sides showing, and pin it to the waist opening of the skirt, also right side out. The 2 layers of the waistband should match up with the waist of the skirt.

Sew using either a straight or zig zag stitch.

Fold the skirt in half so the two raw sides of the skirt match up like this. Sew with a straight stitch all the way down the side.

And... voila!

Flag to Table Runner

My mom's friend gave me a flag to upcycle into something fabulous...

Here is the result!

I added navy blue cotton fabric from Joann's to lengthen it and white pom-pom trim to either end.
Sorry, I don't have a tutorial for it because I honestly didn't think it would turn out!

DIY Holiday Gift Series: Key & Keychain

Give a handmade fabric keychain & a cute colorful key for Christmas...
Difficulty: ♥   ♥ ♥
Supplies:
  • 3" x 36" piece of non-stretchy fabric... I used cotton
  • iron ~ you might be able to use a hair straightener  :)

  • sewing machine or fabric glue
  • key & nail polish for decorating

Take your 3" by 35" cotton fabric, iron in half lengthwise, right side out.

Sew down the long side or iron on fusible tape like steam-a-seam.
Slide a lanyard hook/ key ring onto one strip.
Sew the short ends together with the ring still threaded on strip.
Fold the ends inward, enclosing the ring, & topstitch right above the ring.
All done with the lanyard!

Sewing with polyester knits

So... I got this "crab apple" colored polyester knit fabric. Thing is, polyester knit is one of the ugliest fabrics ever, so I really had to think. OH! A polyester turban headband! :)

You will need:
  • (2) 25" x 6" stretchy or kinda stretchy fabric
  • sewing machine - keep in mind you will want to use a zig zag stitch for most knits.
That's it! Well, and scissors, I guess, but it's not very necessary to type that.

Take each of your 25 by 6 rectangles. Fold them in half  lengthwise, right sides facing in. (Inside out)
Use a zig zag stitch to sew up the sides and leave the ends open. If you use a straight stitch, it might stretch out and ruin the knit fabric. It's delicate like that.
Turn it right side out, and move the seam to the center. Why? Idk, I guess it's pretty.
Fold each tube in half and make them look the picture. (Sorry- this step is hard to explain)
Sew the end of the tubes closed with a straight stitch.
I tried it on and my mom made a weird face. I guess she turbans are too HIPSTER for her. :( Oh well, at least I used some of the fabric!

Lace Dress Reconstruction

My mom bought me a lace dress from Nordstrom Rack for $12! Except, I didn't like it at first...
First, I took off this sad lace flower with a seam ripper.
Then, I cut off the lacy butterfly sleeves.
I folded in the arm hole and sewed a hem for the sleeve.

I added a favorite thrift find: a red elastic belt.  Do you have some clothes that need some reconstructing?

DIY Elastic Belt- and Dyeing tips*

Level:
Supplies:
  • Thick white elastic & fabric dye/bucket/hot water
  • belt fasteners
  • needle & thread to match the dye
  • scissors
  • I originally used Dylon fabric dye for the elastic, but it turned out really cruddy. So I used Rit, the only dye I trust now. :D
Dyeing elastic may take some trial and error, depending on what the elastic is made of. And instead of boiling water in a pot, I put a bucket in the bath tub, filled it with super- hot water and dyed outside. I also mix with a paint stirrer!

After the elastic is dyed to your color of choice, rinse it in cool water and let it dry. Then figure out your belt clasp and pin the elastic and sew.

I hand sewed one side first, then try the belt and cut the rest of the elastic to fit your waist. Sew the other fastener/clasp.

Wear it with a plain dress or a high waisted skirt. Enjoy!
