DIY Holiday Gift Series: Key & Keychain
Give a handmade fabric keychain & a cute colorful key for Christmas...
Difficulty: ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥
Supplies:
- 3" x 36" piece of non-stretchy fabric... I used cotton
- iron ~ you might be able to use a hair straightener :)
- metal key chain ring
- sewing machine or fabric glue
- key & nail polish for decorating
Take your 3" by 35" cotton fabric, iron in half lengthwise, right side out. |
Open it up... |
Fold each side into the center fold... |
and iron! |
Sew down the long side or iron on fusible tape like steam-a-seam. |
Slide a lanyard hook/ key ring onto one strip. |
Sew the short ends together with the ring still threaded on strip. |
Fold the ends inward, enclosing the ring, & topstitch right above the ring. |
All done with the lanyard! |
Take a coordinating color of nail polish... |
And paint the top half of the key! |

DIY Lace trim shorts
I used this method to turn some super short Hollister shorts [I got on sale a while back] into somewhat longer, trendier shorts :)
Difficulty: ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥
You'll need:
- Shorts (old ones, new ones, thrifted ones)
- about 2 yards of lace trim (check the trim/notions section of your local fabric store)
- fabric glue or fabric glue sticks & glue gun or needle & thread
Here are the fabric hot glue sticks I got from JOANN. |
Little by little, tack down the top of the trim , press down, and let dry. |
Once you get close to the end, leave about an inch to turn under the lace and glue that down . |
These are what the sides should look like! |
Done! :) |

DIY Nautical Brooch: A Modcloth Knockoff
Don't you just love brooches? I love the "Anchors Always Pin" from Mod Cloth.
Pin It Now!
Beautiful, right? Well, let's make it. |
Difficulty: ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥
Supplies:
sheet of stiff navy felt
white & red embroidery floss
embroidery needle
pin back to make it a brooch
E6000 glue or hot glue
nautical charms/buttons/ribbon
Cut out two pieces of stiff felt similar to this shape, whatever size you would like. Put the second one aside until the very end. |
Use a washable writing utensil to draw a small circle with a line. (See picture above) |
Thread your needle with the white thread and using the lines as a guide, start embroidering! |
Use small, overlapped stitches. Turn on the TV or radio so you don't drive yourself nuts. |
Add a small horizontal line like the picture above. It should look kind of like the female symbol. |
Trace the two curvy lines of the bottom of the anchor to your felt. Embroider over those as well. |
Almost done! |
Add the two pointed arrow tips. |
Optional: Use the LAZY DAISY STITCH in red to copy the rope detail. |
Add whatever charms or decorations you like with glue. |
Squeeze some glue all over the back of the pin and line up the other felt shape you set aside earlier. |
This will hide the messy work in the back. Now you have a flat surface to glue your pin back too! |
YAY for handmade knockoffs! |
Instead of a pin, you could glue it to a lamp for a nautical themed room! |
